The Sunset Club: Boycott or Be Aware…
I’m not a prude. I’m not naive, either. I realize there are people out there whose sense of humor starts at an R-leaning PG-13 and bottoms out at NC-17. I know some dirty jokes, and I’ve told them in mixed company. I can freakin’ do blue, kid. Hell, I recently told The Aristocrats to a group of friends while floating in Lake Wylie. I’m not particularly proud if it.
But briskly on to the point: The Sunset Club here in Charlotte was recently renovated. This nearly million-dollar upfit included “improvements” to the men’s restroom that – how shall I put it – do not shower women in the most respectable light. Simply put, they are modeled after a woman, and they are anatomically correct. Click here for a not-safe-for-work image.
No doubt, they’re offensive. A good friend of mine is calling for a boycott, and I agree with her. I, for one, a former member, will not be going back. Ever. I’m not one to cry “Female Objectification!” at every fashion magazine cover, but this takes the disrespect of women to a whole new level.
OK, fine. It’s a private club. There’s enough Libertarian in me to scream “stay off my lawn and out of my bathroom”. I disagree with the new toilets, but I defend the club’s right to install them. Whatever. They’re still cheap, crass, and crude, and the club won’t see another dime of my money, for what that’s worth.
Not bothered enough by all this to keep you away? Fine. But ruminate on this: what should we make of the patrons that think the new toilets are “kick ass”? What does that say about the club? To that end, if you go, know what you’re getting into, and what type of clientele you’ll be rubbing elbows with.
